Tenders, Toys and Water Sports: The Hierarchy of Fun

A confession from the industry: the phrase water toys on a listing can mean anything from a superyacht garage to two sad noodles in a lazarette. Since the toy inventory shapes the middle of every charter day, it deserves the same scrutiny as the cabin count. Herewith, the hierarchy, with the questions that separate a garage from a rumor.

ThrillAgesNeeds calm water?What to ask
SeabobHigh, and silent. Fifteen minutes turns anyone into a dolphin.About 10 and up with a vest; adults love it most.Prefers it. Fine in light chop. How many aboard and the charge time. One Seabob for eight guests is a queue.
Jet skiHighest, and loud.14 and up to drive in Florida; anyone born after 1988 needs a boater card. No, but many anchorages restrict it and some ban it.Is it registered and insured for charter use, and where along the route is it allowed.
Inflatable slide or platformMedium, and constant. The stern becomes a beach club.Everyone from 4 to 70.Yes. A swell turns the slide into a catapult.Size in feet, and how long it takes to inflate. Twenty to forty minutes is normal.
PaddleboardsLow, and meditative.8 and up; kids ride double with a parent.Yes. Glass calm is best. How many, inflatable or rigid, and whether the paddles come in a child length.
Clear kayaksLow. The water underneath does the work.6 and up in a double.Yes.Singles or doubles, and whether dry bags come with them.
Snorkel gearDepends entirely on the reef. All ages, if the mask fits. No, but visibility matters more than calm.Sizes aboard, child masks, fins, and whether there is a reef on the day's route.
Floating matLow, and the most used object on any charter.Everyone. Toddlers and grandparents meet here.Prefers it. Ties off to the stern.Size (18 by 6 feet is standard) and how many.
TenderNot a toy. It is the key.All.No.Length, horsepower, whether it tows, and whether it lands where you want to eat.

The aristocracy, and the working class of joy

The Seabob is the undisputed monarch: an underwater scooter that makes every guest a believer for life and makes the guest waiting for it impatient for fifteen minutes. Close behind sits the inflatable platform or slide, which converts the swim step into a private beach club and keeps children occupied for an entire anchorage. And a proper tender, which is not a toy but the key that unlocks shallow beaches, lunch reservations and, in the Bahamas, half the itinerary.

Below the aristocracy is the equipment that actually gets used. Paddleboards and clear kayaks earn their keep at anchor, particularly in the mangrove creeks of Elliott Key. Snorkel gear in the correct sizes is non-negotiable, because an adult mask on a seven-year-old is an afternoon of salt water and tears. And the humble floating mat is, hour for hour, the most used object aboard: the toddlers nap on it, the grandparents read on it, and the adults drift on it with something cold.

The nuance the table cannot hold

Jet skis divide crowds. They are the loudest fun on the water and the most restricted: Biscayne National Park limits them, many anchorages resent them, and the paperwork for running one on a charter is real. Ask before you promise them to teenagers. The inflatable slide has a cousin problem: it is glorious in a flat anchorage and dangerous in a swell, so the captain decides, not the group.

Then match the garage to the party. Kids under twelve: platform, mats, kayaks, snorkel gear, and shade. Adrenaline adults: Seabob, jet ski where allowed, a wakeboard behind a tender with real horsepower. Multigenerational: all of the above, plus a second mat, because the first one will be occupied by the grandmother.
